How does Local Area Co-ordination work?

Local Area Co-ordinators take the time to get to know the individual and their unique circumstances, and work to build a relationship that is fostered on trust, understanding and without judgement.

Local Area Co-ordination is a person centred, strength-based approach to supporting individuals to find practical ways to do the things they want and or need to do, this can range from:

  • Support in planning for the future
  • To provide information, advise, and support.
  • Support to meet new people and connect individuals with their local community.
  • To follow strength-based approaches, to encourage and support people to make the best of their talents, skills and abilities and find ways to share them
  • Support to ensure an individual’s voice is heard and advocate so that the individual can feel in control and make informed / understood choices
  • To feel safe, secure, and more confident about the future and better connected with community resources and networks.
  • To better engage in the community, support people to move from being a passive recipient of services to active citizenship. 
  • To access the right support and services in a timely way if required
  • To support to navigate services.
  • To explore low cost no cost community resources or solutions wherever possible.
  • To identify gaps in services, opportunities, and feed this back into appropriate services or community groups
  • To deliver the Local Area Co-ordination role specifically within a set locality and to hold an establish presence in the community and act as a consistent single point of contact.

Where is support provided?

Local Area Co-ordinators will meet with people within their homes and or local communities, they will engage with the person in their preferred style / choices (Whether face to face or phone / online contact)
