Recycling fun at primary schools

More than 1,000 pupils at 9 of the borough's primary schools have received a fun and engaging lesson in how important it is to recycle properly, thanks to a team from Thurrock Council and a special mobile classroom built into a waste truck.
Cllr Andrew Jefferies, Cabinet member for Environment, said: "These fun interactive lessons are a great way to let young children know just how important recycling is and teach them the best way that they can recycle waste themselves.

Council Chamber opens its doors

Thurrock Council's brand-new Council Chamber has officially welcomed councillors to its seats at an Extraordinary Full Council meeting.
On Thursday 13 October, Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr James Halden was joined by his newly appointed cadet macebearer Marius McMahon and Reverend Canon Darren Barlow to give a blessing of the old Council Chamber and welcome Thurrock's 49 elected members and officers to the new Chamber in the Civic Offices building.

Thurrock Fostering joins other authorities to create new video

Thurrock has joined 55 local authorities across the country to create a video that raises awareness of the importance of fostering in giving disadvantaged children access to a childhood.
The video 'Childhood' debuted at midday today, Thursday 13 October, and can be viewed at thurrock.gov.uk/fostering

Thurrock Council is continuing to help vulnerable households across the borough thanks to an additional £1.295million government funding for the Household Support Fund which will be distributed between now and March 2023.

Garden waste collections to restart from 17 October

Garden waste collections are set to restart on Monday 17 October following a pause to allow a refresh and improve the service.
Cllr Andrew Jefferies, Cabinet member for Environment, said: "I would like to thank residents for patiently bearing with us while we carried out vital work to refresh our household waste collection service over the last 2 weeks.
"Work has taken place to improve the service and we are now ready to resume brown bin food and garden waste collections from next Monday.

Bin lorry fire highlights dangers of flammable waste

The importance of not disposing of flammable materials as part of household waste has been highlighted, after a fire broke out in the back of a Thurrock Council waste lorry yesterday (Thursday 6 October).
Following this incident, the council is asking residents to be careful not to put highly flammable items such as gas cylinders or batteries in their bins.
Cllr Andrew Jefferies, Cabinet member for Environment, said: "The fire service had to be called to assist after waste in the back of one of our lorries caught alight as crews were making their collection rounds.
