Thurrock students lead the way in Debate and Democracy event

4 December 2025

Over 30 secondary school students learned about democratic processes and discussed the issues that matter most to young people at an engaging event led by Thurrock Council’s Youth Cabinet.

As part of UK Parliament Week, members of Thurrock’s Youth Cabinet organised a Debate & Democracy Day for secondary school students across the borough.

Students from St Clere’s School, Hathaway Academy, Thames Park Secondary School, Grays Convent High School, and Mossbourne Port Side Academy took part in interactive workshops, debates, and a Question & Answer session with local councillors.

Sessions explored how the UK Parliament works, why young voices matter, and local developments in Thurrock. The event aimed to build confidence in expressing opinions and deepen understanding of democracy.

Students also had the chance to put their questions to Cllr Lynn Worrall, Leader of Thurrock Council, who delivered a special presentation on Thurrock’s current affairs, including Local Government Reorganisation and Devolution.

UK Parliament Week is an annual, nationwide initiative which helps people learn about the UK Parliament and how they can actively get involved in democracy.

Cllr Lynn Worrall, Leader of Thurrock Council, said: “I was delighted to be involved in the Debate & Democracy Day, which was organised by our fantastic Youth Cabinet members. It is so important that our borough’s young people have an interest in local issues and democracy, and I hope this event has inspired each student to use their voice and get involved in the topics that matter most to them.”

Lexie Chapman, Chairperson for Thurrock’s Youth Cabinet, said: “Over the past month, we’ve worked hard to organise this special day for secondary school students to gain confidence in sharing their opinions and get a better understanding of democratic processes. I’m so pleased we were able to get so many secondary schools involved, and that each of the workshops we put on was well received by the students who took part.”
