Thurrock Council joined people and groups across the world today (Monday 9 March) to raise the flag for Commonwealth Day.
The annual celebration of Commonwealth Day proudly unites 56 countries – almost a third of the world's population – in recognising and honouring the values that the Commonwealth upholds.
The event, held outside the Civic Offices in Grays, was attended by Cllr Sue Shinnick, Mayor of Thurrock, and Leader of the Council, Cllr Lynn Worrall.
They were joined by former servicemen, local cadets and dignitaries. Prayers were led by the Mayor’s Chaplain, Revd Dr Kate Carter.
Cllr Shinnick said: "We proudly join people across the globe in recognising Commonwealth Day. This year’s theme, ‘Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth’, reminds us of the positive change that can be achieved when all 56 member nations work in partnership.
“Here in Thurrock, that spirit of connection is part of our identity. Our three ports continue to be vital gateways for global trade, with ships and goods arriving from across the Commonwealth every week.”
Cllr Worrall said: “As we celebrate Commonwealth Day 2026, we look to the future with the hope that the bonds between all 56 nations remain strong, inclusive and resilient, ensuring no one is left behind.”
