Adopting a child from overseas

Coronavirus (COVID-19) – adoption update

We are still recruiting adopters for Thurrock children and young people. If you are interested in adopting, you can join our information events online and we can hold initial 'visits' by phone or video. Complete an adoption interest form or phone us on 0800 652 1271 and someone from our friendly team will get back to you.

Overseas adoption (intercountry adoption)

The adoption of a child from overseas is complex so we advise you to find out as much as you can about the process. There are several websites that can help but we advise you read GOV.UK: adopting a child from overseas. You will also need to know a lot about the country you are interested in adopting from.

Costs and fees

In addition to processing fees, you are likely to incur:

  • travel expenses
  • translation fees
  • fees for notarisation (legal registrations)
  • various other costs in the child's country, which will vary for different countries

Intercountry adoption can be complicated because prospective adopters must comply with UK regulations as well as those of the child's country. Some overseas adoption processes can be quite long.

Next step

If you are interested in finding out more, you could attend an information session at the Intercountry Adoption Centre in Barnet before deciding to go any further.

All of our overseas adopters attend a preparatory workshop for the specific country from which they intend to adopt. This is provided by the Intercountry Adoption Centre in Barnet.
